I wrote this piece as a final essay for Feature Writing: JOUR 3540 class with Jennifer Chrumka in the fall of 2025.

This piece comes from a place of love: love for the sport, love for the game, love for the team. So many attributes that fell into this place of writing with enjoyment, which is a grey area for me as I enjoy writing, but 9 times out of 10, it is for academic purposes. However, I knew going into this is that I didn’t want to struggle through this paper, writing down to the wire with sweat dripping down my forehead in attempts to make the 11:59 pm submission time.

I wanted to enjoy my time writing, editing, reading this piece and not have any sort of “resentment” towards this after I was done, I wanted to be able to be proud of this piece and all of the work, research, and writing I had put into it.

My time writing this piece was fun, frustrating, enjoyable, and rewarding all at the same time, I thank Jennifer graciously for pushing me with my writing, as at first, I didn’t even know what to write about for this assignment. I am happy I wrote about something I love, this piece is more fun and from the heart, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

“As the clock winds down, forward Kiefer Sherwood (44) slides the puck to longest tenured Canuck and forward, Brock Boeser.  Boeser (6) skates the puck forward and dumps it in behind the Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender, making the score 4-3 Canucks. Electricity pumps through the arena knowing that we netted the game winning goal.1

“So when I had one row of fans in front of me, glass side, right beside the Canucks bench where the players would be walking out, reality hit, and my hands did shake a little when they came onto the ice, squee! A truly fascinating experience, indeed!”

“Securing the Saturday night win, The crowd erupts in cheers as “Don’t You Forget About Me” by Simple Minds hums through the arena. I can tell you, I didn’t forget about them, I was right there with them.”
